S1: Comm. Matt. 8.6 (on Matt 9:2–3)
- Source: https://gloss-e.irht.cnrs.fr/php/editions_chapitre.php?chapitre=55_9&id=catena&numLivre=55 (IRHT scholarly edition of the Glossa catena, quoting Hilary)
- Text: “Movet scribas remissum ab homine peccatum … et remissum est ab eo quod lex laxare non poterat; fides enim sola iustificat.” (“the Law could not release it; for faith alone justifies”). The IRHT catena has the same wording: “que lex laxare non poterat fides enim sola iustificat”.
- Context: Hilary is commenting on the healing of the paralytic. Williams notes that Hilary is explaining how the Gentiles share in the covenant, not setting out a full soteriology. The catena is an independent scholarly witness to the wording.
