Afterlife: reasoning steps
Verdicts: categories/afterlife.md. Weighing criteria as in justification reasoning: Scripture in context and original language; each father’s polemical setting; date and breadth of witness; explicit beats inferred; unverified texts carry no weight.
Post-750 development by tradition
Catholic
Trent XXV (Waterworth, verified): “there is a Purgatory, and … the souls there detained are helped by the suffrages of the faithful, but principally by the acceptable sacrifice of the altar”. Close on L1, L2 and L4. L3 is defined further than the fathers went. L5 is A.
Orthodox
Dositheus Decree 18 (crivoice, verified): souls are “either at rest or in torment … neither their enjoyment nor condemnation are complete”. The repentant who die without making satisfaction “depart into Hades, and there endure the punishment due to the sins they have committed” and are “delivered … through the prayers of the Priests … especially the unbloody Sacrifice”. Close on L1–L4. Florence-era Orthodox rejected purgatorial fire (to verify). Some modern Orthodox are sympathetic to Gregory of Nyssa (B).
Lutheran
Luther rejected purgatory (Smalcald Articles II.2, to verify). The Apology allows that prayer for the dead is not forbidden (Ap. XXIV, to verify). Close on L1 and L4. Departs on L3, and partly on L2.
Presbyterian
WCF XXXII.1 (opc.org, verified): “Besides these two places, for souls separated from their bodies, the Scripture acknowledgeth none.” XXI.4: prayer “not for the dead”. XXXIII.2: the wicked “cast into eternal torments”. Matches L1, L4 and L5 (A). Departs on L2 and L3.
